Court reserves judgement on SAA's retrenchment matter
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Judgement has been reserved by the Labour Court in Johannesburg - in the matter involving the retrenchment of South African Airways staff.
NUMSA and SA Cabin Crew Association want the process interdicted and declared unlawful.
They argue that the airline's business rescue practitioners haven't produced a business rescue plan.
Employees have been offered severance packages and given a deadline to sign.
"We said that we are requesting the judge to give us an interdict to block them from proceeding with this process. Both parties presented their argument. Judgement in the case is reserved," NUMSA spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says.
"The judge has indicated that he understands that this is an urgent matter and he has promised that he will hand down a judgement soon. We don't know specifically when that will be, but we are expecting that they will let us know in due course."
Yesterday, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan told Parliament that SAA's business rescue practitioners must account for the R5.5 billion they've spent since the start of the year.
He says more than R30 million rand was paid to aviation advisors from an American firm - but they've yet to see the work they've done.
