Court dismisses Zuma's appeal in Hanekom case
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
Former president Jacob Zuma's application for leave to appeal the judgement in the defamation case brought by former minister Derek Hanekom has been dismissed in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Thursday.
Hanekom brought an urgent interdict against Zuma after he tweeted that Hanekom was an enemy agent.
The former minister said the tweet had been interpreted as him having been an apartheid spy and damaged his reputation.
Zuma argued that he merely meant Hanekom worked with the EFF and others to oust him as the president.
In September, the Durban High Court ruled that the tweet was defamatory, false and unlawful and ordered Zuma to delete it and apologise to Hanekom.
Zuma's bid to appeal the judgement has been dismissed with costs, with the high court saying it has no prospect of success.
