Court dismisses Macsteel's bid to interdict strike
Updated | By Nomfundo Ngcobo
The Labour Court has dismissed an urgent application to interdict a strike action by Macsteel workers in KwaZulu-Natal.
Employees downed tools last week - accusing management of having unilaterally reduced their salaries by 20 percent without consultation.
The court says cutting pay for three months constitutes a change in the terms and conditions of employment.
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says the COVID-19 pandemic has affected many people and it's in everyone's interest to find a solution that benefits all parties.

Hlubi-Majola says the judgement has vindicated workers.
"Our members were acting within the law when they embarked on strike action over this issue, and it remains a protected strike.
"We hope that following this judgement management will realize the error of their ways and engage meaningfully with us on the challenges they are facing financially."
