Counterfeit cigarettes, clothes worth R3m seized in separate raids in Durban
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal say they are going after the criminal syndicates operating in the province.
Authorities seized counterfeit cigarettes and clothes worth R3 million each during raids in Phoenix and the Durban Habour at the weekend.
The Economic Development Department says a suspect was also arrested for allegedly selling counterfeit medication and sweets valued at millions of Rands.
Spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya says they are currently monitoring other businesses and their activities.
"SARS reported that some of these syndicates exploit differential taxes of highly-taxed goods such as cigarettes, alcohol and petroleum."
"They sometimes choose not to declare their goods. These are the issues that the MEC is dealing with as a matter of urgency."
