A ward councillor on the KZN north coast says they are in disbelief after a local contractor drowned while doing repairs to a water pipe.
The man died on Wednesday afternoon on site in Salt Rock.
It's understood a pipe burst causing a trench to collapse.
The man from KwaDukuza was buried waist deep. He drowned after water filled the pit.

Emergency officials worked for several hours to retrieve his body.
"It was an active construction site that was being trenched. The incident was compounded by a water pipe bursting. It is an active investigation. There were relentless efforts from IPSS Medical Rescue including the KwaDukuza fire and emergency to try their utmost best to try and recover the remains of the individual," said Ward 22 councillor, Privi Makhan.
Makhan says the repair work the man was carrying out was not assigned by KwaDukuza Municipality.
