Cost of food predicted to spike

A group, monitoring food security, says consumers can expect more tough times ahead, right through to Christmas.

The Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity group has released a report which shows that the cost of food is likely to go up again. 


It says basic food basket prices have shot up by around R250, since the start of the COVID-19 lockdown in March. 


The group's Julie Smith says the cost of rice, bread, milk and maize meal have all increased.

She says consumers face a double whammy this year, with the seasonal food price hike in September. 


"So normally what happens from September the prices start increasing and they carry on increasing through the Christmas period. 


"Retailers do put up their prices because they profiteering. They worry that we have is that South African household have almost no more capacity to absorb shocks for the extra costs of school fees and transport."
