Cosatu urges ‘aggressive intervention’ amid job losses at SOEs
Cosatu has called for the government to intervene in the reduction of job losses at the South African Post Office.
The trade union federation’s call comes as more workers are expected to be laid off.
The Post Office’s business rescue practitioners sent out some 4,700 retrenchment letters to staff who will lose their jobs, leaving the state-owned entity with 6,383 staff, down from 11,083.
The job cuts are less than the 6,000 initially planned after consultation with unions at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).
In Limpopo, 300 employees have until the end of April to serve at their respective branches.

Cosatu’s provincial secretary, Hangwani Mashau, has urged a solution to the retrenchment crisis.
“We reject the intended retrenchments at the Post Office because that is a continuation of a loss of jobs for many people who work at the SOEs.
“On the contrary, as Cosatu, we believe the SEOs should be assisted, and the government should intervene. Government should intervene aggressively."
