Cosatu to picket over Sassa debacle
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Cosatu in KZN will be staging a picket outside SASSA's office in Pietermaritzburg this morning - emphasising that officials responsible for the grant payment crisis must be held accountable.
The Constitutional Court ruled on Friday that Cash Paymaster Services must continue distributing social grants for another year after SASSA failed to in-source the payment of grants.
To ensure the validity of the new contract and payments to grant beneficiaries by SASSA and CPS, the court made the ruling in line with a number of conditions.
One of the court orders include that the minister and SASSA are required to file reports on affidavit every three months - detailing how the parties plan to ensure the payment of social grants after the expiry of the 12-month period.

The trade union's Edwin Mkhize says they're standing with grant recipients today and are calling on government to make plans for payments next month, crystal clear.
"We really have to take up this issue involving SASSA and try to make sure that there is commitment from the side of government. As much as the court has spoken on this matter, we are saying as Cosatu that government officials must be held accountable," he said.
