Cosatu to march in North Coast over worker conditions
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Representatives from the Labour Department as well as the Office of the Premier are today expected to accept a memorandum of demands from Cosatu - which will be taking part in a protest in Isithebe on the north coast.
Cosatu's provincial secretary, Edwin Mkhize, says among their demands is for factory workers to be paid more as the R300 to R500 they earn a week is not enough. He says they are also calling for an end to long-term temporary employment agreements.
"You also have a situation where you find that the working conditions in some companies are not conducive enough for workers to work in them," he said.
"There are some serious scrupulous conditions that continue to face members," Mkhize said.
The town was earlier this year hit by protests of a different kind. Unhappiness over the nomination process of certain people standing for councillor in the municipal elections saw several factories burned down.
