Cosatu concerned over unemployment rate
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Cosatu says it is concerned about the rising level of unemployment in the country.
Statistics South Africa released its Quarterly Labour Force Survey yesterday.
It showed that our unemployment rate climbed to 25.5% in the third quarter of the year.
Edwin Mkhize, Cosatu's provincial secretary for KwaZulu-Natal, says what is most worrying is that more than 65% of people who are unemployed are the youth.
He says the problem needs to be dealt with now.
"At the level of Nedlac, as Cosatu we're calling for engagement urgently - that will deal with the issue of how do we prevent these retrenchments, and how do we make sure that as a country we're able to create quality jobs and creating sustainable means of creating quality jobs so that people can get employment," he said.
