Cosatu challenges decision to suspend 2015/2016 performance bonuses

Trade union federation, Cosatu in KZN says it will fight the decision by the Premier's Office to suspend performance bonuses for the 2015/2016 cycle - saying it was taken without their input.

Addressing a press briefing in Durban today, Provincial Secretary Edwin Mkhize said while they do not oppose cost-cutting measures in the province, they should not affect workers and their ability to put bread on the table for their families.

"We take this as misleading, provocative, and union bashing. This confirms one thing that the first target of the neo-liberals when it comes to rescuing capitalism is always workers as they have done in other countries such as Greece. This must be put to an end," he said.

Spokesperson for the Premier, Ndabezinhle Sibiya says cost-cutting is taking place across many government departments.

"This has also affected government departments. As you know, we started the year on a very negative note with an economic crisis.

"For that reason there have been cost-cutting measures to various government departments across the province. We want to deal with the matter with organised labour," he said.
