Coronovirus: 201 SA citizens still in Wuhan

Government says currently 201 South Africans are in the Coronovirus-hit city of Wuhan, in China with more than half wishing to come home.

The inter ministerial committee has been briefing media at the OR Tambo international airport this morning. Last week government announced that those wanting to come home will be repatriated. 


The Free State has been identified as a location where the quarantined group will be housed for 21 days. 


Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says they are maintaining constant communication with the citizens in China. He says they are constantly getting varying feedback from the citizens regarding staying in China or coming back home.


"201 South Africans are living in the area of Wuhan. 151 of them have indicated they want to be repatriated", he said. 


"This figure changes almost daily. At some point we recorded 80, then 130 and now it is 151 and this is based on us calling them daily to see what assistance they need", Mkhize said.
