CoronaVac approval 'turning point' for SA's jab rollout

The Health Department says the approval of the CoronaVac jab is a turning point and brings relief to the country's vaccination rollout.

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) has approved the use of the Chinese Sinovac vaccine for South Africa.

But it's on condition the manufacturer submits final results of ongoing clinical studies.


Spokesperson to the acting health minister, Hlengiwe Nhlabathi-Mokota, says the department welcomes the reduction in the turnaround time to process applications for registrations of Covid-19 vaccines and other medical products.


"This approval came at the time when the government is implementing an expanded and multipronged vaccination programme to reach as many people as possible. 


"This will enable government to initiate procurement processes to secure more vaccine.


"More information on this vaccine, including the level of safety and efficacy against the current dominant Delta variant in South Africa will be made available at a later stage."
