Cornubia to be subsidised after 2022 Games

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Human Settlements says building the athletes' village for the 2022 Commonwealth Games will not divert focus from low-cost housing provision in eThekwini.

It was officially announced in New Zealand yesterday that Durban will host the games.

About 1000 units will be built for the athletes.

The units will then be converted into apartments, which may be bought or rented after the Games.

Human Settlements' Mbulelo Baloyi says they will be targeting a certain class of people.

"The market that we're targeting is people who are working, who need to pay rentals but not exorbitant rent that one would find in the commercial markets.

"So, basically this is subsidised rentals. In as much as we cater for free housing in terms of RDP as well as emergency houses, we're also making sure that those people who are outside the threshold of the RDP houses are catered for," he said.
