Cops bust Phoenix drug dens

Police have raided two alleged drug dens in the Phoenix area, north of Durban.

In the first raid, officers say they found two men in possession of 2,050 heroin capsules, 60 mandrax tablets and five pieces of rock cocaine at the Rucklen Place property yesterday.

The estimated street value of the drugs is R44,500.

Members of the eThekwini Outer North Cluster Crime Intelligence Unit, Durban Public Order Police, Durban Metro and the Hawks also confiscated R11,827 in cash.

Police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbele says the two suspects, aged 25 and 36 years, have been charged for allegedly dealing in drugs.

Later in the day, officers from Phoenix SAPS carried out an intelligence driven operation and swooped on a property where heroin was allegedly being manufactured.

After keeping observation on the property in Westham Place, police entered the premises and seized heroin that was being manufactured and packed.

"A total of 2,900 capsules of heroin, 720 mandrax tablets, 500g of heroin powder and 70,000 empty capsules as well as machinery were seized," said Mbele.

A 30-year-old suspect was arrested for allegedly being in possession of drugs.

Mbele says all three suspects are due to appear in the Verulam Magistrate's Court today.
