A northern KwaZulu-Natal cop is recovering in hospital after he was wounded in a shootout that left a suspect dead.
Police arrested a triple murder suspect in Msinga on Tuesday and were on their way to detain him when officers spotted a man holding a gun at a local taxi rank.
Provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said when the team approached him, the man opened fire.
He says an officer was struck in the arm.
"Police returned fire, and during the shootout, the suspect was fatally wounded. He was found in possession of a .38 special revolver whose serial number was erased.

"The firearms will be taken for ballistic testing to ascertain if they are linked to other crime scenes. The injured police were taken to hospital for medical attention."
Netshiunda said a multidisciplinary team worked together to make the breakthrough in the triple-murder case.
"The suspect was traced and cornered at Msinga where he was arrested, and was found in possession of a rifle which is believed to be the weapon which was used in the commission of the murders."
