Contest for ANC leadership shouldn't cause divisions: Mantashe
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
ANC Secretary-General, Gwede Mantashe says contesting the party's leadership positions must unite the organisation rather than divide.
Mantashe has briefed reporters on the outcomes of the current NEC's last meeting for their term of office held in Pretoria yesterday.
He says contestation for leadership is part of the internal democracy of the party.
"If you counter pose that with the wisdom of the president to a narrative that if there's contestation, you will prepare for a breakaway - It's a terrible narrative actually. Contestation for leadership must strengthen the ANC not weaken it," he says.

Matashe says unity is crucial to the success of the 54th national conference.
"The success of the conference will be judged by the extent to which were made in roles in deepening and strengthening unity of our movement and society in general," he says.
