Content creators to march against proposed copyright laws

Trade unions believe artists, musicians and content writers need to be more aware about the impact of the Copyright Amendment Bill if the proposed legislation is signed into law in its current form.

The bill is currently being considered by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Groups are planning to march to the offices of Gauteng's Arts, Culture and Recreation Department next week.

They want the proposed law to be reworked.

The current draft allows for the re-use of copyrighted and protected material for general, educational or private use.

The Musicians' Union of South Africa's Mbongeni Ndlovu feels this will hurt the pockets of already struggling artists.

"What will happen to the [content] creator? The creator is losing money because you have created the content with the view to make money. But is everyone can use the word for free, it will eventually reduce your income," he said.

Ndlovu says they will fight tooth and nail until the bill is redrafted.

The Department of Trade believes the bill will improve access to content of an educational nature, while also protecting the interests of content creators.
