Consumers warned on overspending during Black Friday weekend

Retailers reflect on Black Friday frenzy

Management at The Pavillion Shopping Mall says all went well during yesterday's Black Friday.

The day saw a frenzy of shoppers at shopping centres countrywide capitalise on massively reduced products.

The mall's Nisha Kemraj says they were overwhelmed by the number of shoppers who had come to take advantage of the discounts.

"We are still quite taken aback by the impact that Black Friday has had. So while we had those maddening crowds early in the morning we are still finding a bit of sustained foot count coming into the centre," she said.

Consumer journalist, Wendy Knowler, has warned consumers as some retailers continue with slashed prices until tomorrow.

She says specials at retailers mean shoppers will begin spending much sooner for the festive season - something likely to hurt their pockets in the long term.

"One bank reported that last year's Black Friday saw an 81% increase on card holder activity," she said.

"I have to wonder what that does to over indebted consumers in January, which was bad enough before Black Friday came along," Knowler said.
