Debt Rescue's Neil Roets says the fuel hike announcement is a devastating blow to consumers.

"Salaries are not going up in line with the fuel price hike and to top it all off businesses are sitting without electricity and they cannot make money and pay their employees."

From midnight on Tuesday, petrol will go up by R2.37 and R2.57 a litre.

Diesel will cost R2.31 more.

This means that for the first time, we'll be paying over R25 for a litre of petrol.

Roets says many consumers have already hit their breaking point.

"It's impossible for people who are poor to go back to work considering what they have to pay for petrol. Not all companies allow their people to work remotely, so this causes a massive problem for employees out there."
