The National Consumer Commission says it's keeping a close eye on the recall of some peanut butter products by retail giant Pick n Pay.

The group announced on Saturday that it's recalling its No Name Brand Smooth Peanut Butter, Eden Smooth Peanut Butter and Eden Crunch Peanut Butter over heath concerns.

It says in-house standard testing found the products to have higher than regulated levels of AFLATOXIN.

Aflatoxins are a naturally occurring mycotoxin produced by some mould found on crops including peanuts, maize and wheat.

According to the World Heath Organisation, they are considered carcino-genic substances.

Pick n Pay has asked consumers to return the affected peanut butter products that have an expiry date of between now and July 2025.

The Consumer Commission's Phetho Ntaba say are still assessing the recall notification.

"“We want to urge South Africans who are in possession of the recalled products to stop using or consuming the products, as they are not safe for their health. We say to South African consumers, take the product to the point of purchase for a full refund.

“We can confirm that we have received a recall notification from Pick n Pay on Friday. At the moment, the commission is assessing the recall notification, also looking at their communication strategy and other nitty-gritties around the recall.”

Pick n Pay says all affected stock has already been removed from its stores countrywide.

No other peanut butter brand at the retailer is involved in the recall.
