King Goodwill Zwelithini passed away from COVID-19
complications.
Speaking on behalf of the royal family, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi confirmed the news in an address to the nation on Saturday evening.
Zwelithini who suffered from diabetes was admitted to hospital in early February.
Buthelezi delivered an emotional address where he bid farewell to the monarch in the presence of community leaders and the media.
Zwelithini was on a ventilator and according to Buthelezi, his condition initially began to improve but took a turn for worse in the last week.
The remains of the late King arrived at the Royal Palace in Nongoma on Saturday afternoon.
It will however not lie in state and will be transported to a mortuary in Nongoma.
The royal family opted for the body not to lie in state, citing COVID-19 regulations as the reason behind their decision.
