ConCourt rejects Zuma's appeal against Hanekom tweet judgement
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Constitutional Court has dismissed former president Jacob Zuma’s application for leave to appeal a High Court judgement that found he defamed former minister Derek Hanekom.
Hanekom brought an urgent interdict against Zuma in the Durban High Court last year - after the former president tweeted that Hanekom was an enemy agent.
The former minister's legal team argued the tweet was interpreted as him having been an apartheid spy.
Zuma's counsel claimed he merely meant that Hanekom worked with the EFF and other parties to oust him as head of state.
Judge Daya Pillay ruled the tweet was defamatory, false and unlawful - and ordered Zuma to delete it from his account.
The Con Court dismissed his application with costs - saying it has no reasonable prospects of success.
Hanekom released a statement saying he welcomes the decisions by the court.
