ConCourt needs to revisit eviction ruling – expert

A law expert believes it's time for the Constitutional Court to revisit its ruling that alternative accommodation must be provided to people before they are evicted.

Advocate Mannie Witz says the matter of hijacked buildings has necessitated this.
"The time has now come that the Constitutional Court will have to deal with the constitutional rights of the owners of the properties and in regards to their rights.
"The Constitutional Court will hear the sides of all the different parties that are involved."

Seventy-seven people lost their lives when a building in Marshalltown in the Johannesburg CBD caught fire last week.
It had been hijacked by a gang that was charging the people occupying it rent.
The Department of Public Works says at least 1 260 of 29 000 buildings owned by the government are being illegally occupied.
