Concerns over schools remaining open during third Covid wave

Teachers and other staff are being urged to remain in class ahead of the Covid-19 vaccination rollout targeting them.

The Department of Basic Education says regular attendance will help the successful implementation of the programme.


Vaccination of school staff is due to start on Wednesday.


Government is hoping to jab over 582 000 of them in the next two weeks.


The Educators Union of South Africa has been kicking up a stink over the decision to keep schools open amid the third wave.

It's called on teachers to stay home. 


The union's Kabelo Mahlobogwane says inoculating teachers doesn't mean they won't catch the virus.


"We are concerned that the Minister of Basic Education (Angie Motshekga) used virtual platforms to consult her colleagues and the decision to keep schools open, yet the same minister decided that learners and teachers must go to school when she is afraid of going to meetings with stakeholders herself. 


“It does not make sense. We have a country that is on level 3, yet the minister decides that schools be on level zero. How is that possible?"
