About three dozen school children from Richards Bay High School had to be taken to hospital in the morning.

Paramedics say they were having breathing difficulties and feeling dizzy and nauseous.

It's understood some of them collapsed.

The Richards Bay Clean Air Association says local company Foskor informed them that one of their plants was shut down at around seven on Monday morning to repair an acid leak.

It says this is contrary to the statement Foskor released on Tuesday, saying their investigating team found no leaks at any of their facilities.

The association's director Sandy Camminga says they will engage further with Foskor management.

"At present, we are in the process of consolidating all of the complaints that we received. It seems that everybody thinks that only the high school was affected, that is actually not the case at all.

"We started receiving complaints as early as 06:19 in the road outside the Foskor facility and then in other suburbs. So when we start looking at the range of complaints, it is very evident that is wasn't just confined to the Afrikaans high school."

Ward 3 councillor Henning de Wet says residents are angry after holding a meeting on Tuesday night.

"The continuous gas leaks that we have experienced over time in the area they've have also been expressing their unhappiness that there is never accountability or answers given as to why are they experiencing these gas leaks.

“It has come to a point where the residents feel that they don't have any recourse so they cannot take any action."
