The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance says many people, living close to petrochemical factories, are already battling chronic illnesses like asthma.

Wentworth families feel, because of this, they have an increased risk of getting sick from the new virus.

The Alliance's Desmond D'sa says studies have been done on the impact of the pandemic on people exposed to air pollution.

"It's going to have an impact on the COVID-19, it not directly responsible, but it can exacerbate the health problems that you are experiencing at that time."
