Concern over alleged gang-related shootings in Wentworth
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Residents of Wentworth, south of Durban are worried about their safety especially that of their children following a series of shootings suspected to be gang-related.
A nine-year-old boy was hit by a stray bullet on Major Calvert Road at the weekend. He was taken to hospital and is now recovering at home.
The area's CPF chairman Donovan Anderson says this was after a young man, who is suspected to have links to local gangs, was shot and wounded on Thursday.
He says residents believe this lead to revenge shootings as shots rang out throughout the weekend in the area.
Anderson says this morning they met with officers at the Wentworth Police Station as well the Provincial Commissioner to raise their concerns.
"In the same day we had all these shootings take place. At 1.30pm - a house in Austerville Drive was shot at, a guy was shot at late in the afternoon while he was walking. A bullet graved his head.
"Two other guys were shot in the thigh. The police commissioner subsequently told us there were quite a few arrests," he said.
