The Comrades Marathon Association says a runner, who was admitted to hospital in a critical condition, has shown signs of improvement.
"There was one runner who was in ICU at the time of the report yesterday that the athlete was breathing on his own and was taken off the ventilator," says the association's chairperson Mqondisi Ngcobo.
Ngcobo says they're heartbroken by the deaths of two runners on Sunday.

Mzamo Mthembu, a member of the Hollywoodbets Athletic Club, suffered complications along the route in Pinetown and passed away later in hospital.
News came through on Monday that Phakamile Ntshiza, who was with the Adventist Athletics Club in Gauteng, also got into distress near Drummond.
"We are very saddened by the passing away of those athletes who were doing what they love. It is unfortunate and we are saddened that we had to lose runners on a day when we were celebrating the return after two years of absence," says Ngcobo.
