Competition Commission warns over ‘inflated’ school uniform prices
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
With back-to-school shopping on many to-do lists this week, the Competition Commission is asking parents to flag stores that overcharge them for school uniforms and supplies.
It's reminded retailers to comply with the guidelines on school uniforms or face penalties for anti-competitive conduct.
Spokesperson Siybulela Makunga says uniforms should be obtainable from as many suppliers as possible.
“The commission calls on all parents, SGBs, community structures and government to be vigilant and report any form of contravention.
“We are calling on principles, in particular, to ensure that each parent of guardian is aware of the choices they can exercise in purchasing school uniforms.”
Schools in KZN reopen next Wednesday.
Makunga says they'll be monitoring the sale of supplies.
The commission says where necessary, exclusivity should be limited only to a few "must" items like school badges.
You can report inflated pricing via email [email protected] or the Commission's SMS/WhatsApp line 084 743 0000.
