Community demands closure of creche amid sexual assault claims
Updated | By Lauren Hendricks
The Newlands East
community in Durban is calling for the closure of a creche where a toddler was
sexually assaulted, allegedly by a worker.
The following bulletin contains upsetting and distressing details of abuse - and is not suitable for younger listeners.
The mother of the 1-year-old girl says she realised something was wrong on Tuesday when her child was crying and holding her private area.
"I have been going through a lot: anxiety attacks. I can’t leave, I can’t sleep, I can’t even eat. The day that I found out, I was in shock and couldn't even think straight because I had never seen my child like that before.
The mother says she only managed to get her toddler examined the following day because the first hospital she took her to had no rape kits.”

Police have confirmed a case of rape is being investigated by the Newlands East SAPS.
They say the docket has been transferred to the Inanda Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
Local anti-GBV activist Nadia Bernon says the community is outraged and wants an immediate arrest.
"We are all standing together and we wanting to take action against this so now they can’t intimidate a structure and that is why the community has now come forward and wanted to do mob justice. If the police do not make an arrest the community is going to take action."
