Commission of Inquiry into KZN political killings gets go-ahead

The KZN Legislature's Executive Council has put its stamp of approval on a Commission of Inquiry into political killings in the province. According to a statement released last night, political killings have been prevalent in the province since 2011.

According to a statement released last night, political killings have been prevalent in the province since 2011. 


 The statement released by the Premier's Office notes that 20 people from different political parties have been killed this year alone, with ANC members accounting for 12 of those. 


Recently, an SACP and ANC member were killed in Inchanga - incidents believed to be linked to political tensions in the region

The commission's main purpose will be to identify the underlying causes of the killings. 


The statement further notes that the killings have had an adverse effect on governance. 


The Commission of Inquiry is still in the process of being established and a multi-party intervention committee will consult political parties, religious, traditional and others leaders of society to ensure that the process is inclusive. 


The provincial EXCO says once all this is concluded, the names of the commissioners and details around the functioning of the commission will be made public.
