Coligny man turns on media

Livid residents descended on a local farm house, and set it alight, after two farmers were granted bail in the local magistrate's court in the small North West town.

Pieter Doorewaard and Philip Schutte, who are accused of killing a teenage boy after he allegedly stole sunflowers from a field, were granted bail of R5000 each.

Members of the media were attacked while reporting on the torching of the house.

A man also pulled a gun on journalists, chasing them from the property.

Residents have again taken to the streets, to show their anger at the men being granted bail.

"Our son passed away and we buried him yesterday, then today they were just given bail. Why should the magistrate do that? It's unfair," said one resident.

Fires were started as residents barricaded roads.

Police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone said officers have been deployed in the area.

"We are currently monitoring the situation, particularly in front of the court, where most of the people are gathered. The situation is not yet out of control."
