Coal mines officially on strike
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
About 30 000 National Union of Mineworkers members in the coal sector are officially on strike.
They downed tools last night after pay hike negotiations collapsed last week.
They want a 13% increase or R1000 more for the lowest paid worker.
The Chamber of mines is offering R300.
Spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu says the strike will continue indefinitely.
''We urge the chamber of mines to come on board so that we can resolve our differences.
''As you know, most of the coal mining companies supply Eskom with coal, we hope that the utility has enough stock to keep the lights on in South Africa,'' he said.
Last week, Eskom said as long as the strike does not continue beyond a month the industrial action would not affect the country’s electricity supply as there is enough coal for 30 days.
