Climate change still not understood: Expert
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
An expert in the energy sector feels that in its current form the Climate Change Bill assumes most sectors and their professionals understand what climate change is.
Eskom's Dr Troy Govender has been weighing in during a stakeholder discussion on the bill. Delegates heard that South Africa is one of the highest carbon emitters on the African continent.
Govender says there needs to be a clearer understanding of what climate change is and its effects.
"Climate change and environmental issues are not high priorities among some industries and professionals. The planners, engineers, designers, construction workers - those who have to implement these plans do not fully understand what climate change is", he said.
"I think we have to look at a more applicable and relevant term to climate change so that majority of people understand what it is and are therefore able to respond appropriately", Govender said.
