Clermont toddlers' family speak about tragedy

The family of toddlers Asiphile and Bayanda Sithole, who died in yesterday’s heat after being stuck inside a disused car in Clermont, have told of how the children prayed before going out to play.

Two other children who were with them were rushed to hospital.

The four children were found all unconscious in the car.

The family of the Sithole cousins Bayanda , Asiphile, Ayabonga say in retrospect the children could have known how the day would unfold.

The children’s relative Jabu Khuzwayo says the cousins and their friend Phiwokuhle Mtshali all knelt down and prayed only saying “ oh lord” repeatedly - they had been preparing to walk Phiwokuhle home.

Bayanda’s mother went looking for them after they had been gone for some time and found them in the red Toyota corolla parked in Ernest Phiri’s house.

Phiri, a mechanic, had arrived with the vehicle on Monday to fix it and had left forgotten to lock it.

The family says at the back of their minds they knew the children would die because they remained unconscious even after CPR and water was poured over them.

Khuzwayo described the whole thing as a “nightmare”. Phiwokuhle and Ayabonga are still in hospital.
