Clean-up operation after Alverston fuel spill
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Residents in the Alverston area, outside Hillcrest where Transnet Pipelines is performing a clean-up operation will be able to return to their homes today or tomorrow.
Community members were encouraged to stay over at friends' houses or were put up in a hotel by the company due to the smell of the fuel. The petrol pipeline burst on Tuesday.
Transnet's Saret Knoetze says it is unknown what caused the incident.
"We're currently repairing the pipeline and rehabilitating the area. It's in Sparrow Lane, in Alverston," she said.
The pipeline pumps fuel inland from the Durban Harbour.
