More than 40 vehicles were involved in the pile-up.

Traffic officials say one lane remains closed between Hilton and Cedara.

Five people lost their lives in the collision that involved cars, minibus taxis and trucks.

An hours-long closure saw vehicles being diverted, while stranded travellers were invited to spend the night in community halls opened by the local government.

Zinhle Mgomezulu, who's with the Road Traffic Inspectorate, says the truckers' lane at Peters Brown on the northbound side is closed, while two lanes there are open.

"One of the trucks had a diesel spillage and now the road is slippery and that is why one lane is closed. Initially, we counted 35 cars while we were on the scene. But on completion of the clear up of the road, we counted 41."

The cause of the mass crash is not yet known.

It happened while many holidaymakers to KZN were heading out of the province following the Easter long weekend.
