In KwaZulu-Natal, hundreds of former Grade 12s have been flocking to petrol stations and shops on Friday morning to search for their exam numbers in the newspaper.

Shival Biharie from Ladysmith Secondary School is delighted that he passed.

He wants to fulfil his dream of joining the air force.

"It's been a very tough year for us, especially with Covid and the lockdown, but we push. We pushed and we managed and we came out with good results in the end, and for the matrics for 2022, I'd like to say to the don't stress as much and don't get pressurised by anyone."

Lusanda Kuzwayo from Port Shepstone High School will focus on obtaining an LLB degree.

She's thrilled with her results.

"Having to go through the looting, being out of school, going to school every day and corona in between - just really quite a rollercoaster of a year but having come out of it, triumphant with distinctions I am just really pleasantly surprised with everything how it worked out and grateful for life itself."

Kean Padayachee, who matriculated from Werda High School in Hillary, says he managed to bag five distinctions.

"Although it was really hard work and sacrifice that got me through, I am thankful for my achievement. I plan on going to study either pharmacy, law or psychology.

"I'd like to thank my lord and saviour, Jesus Christ, I also want to thank my parents, grandparents and the rest of my family for all the support and prayers and for just putting up with me."

Meanwhile, Educational Psychologist based in Durban Nicola Buhr says a poor result is not the end of the world.

"If your marks are disastrous and absolutely not what you expected, rewriting matric is not a bad option. Just rewrite it. Do matric again, do the subjects you need to do again and then get the matric you are looking for.
