The city issued a notice to concerned residents following claims recently that the supply to O’Flaherty Road had been contaminated.

According to the Ward 23 councillor, the freshwater pipelines became contaminated with sewage during repairs to water infrastructure in the area.

The municipality's Lindiwe Khuzwayo said samples were tested and they acted quickly by flushing out the pipelines.

She said they had since completed repairs and conducted more water quality tests.

"These claims are false and misleading. The municipality assures residents that the results of tap water samples taken on 6 and 7 April in O’Flattery Road, Clare Estate were compliant with potable water standards as per the South African National Standard 241 for drinking water.

But resident Prashant Soodyal said there are still doubts.

"It's quite traumatic, we have children and elderly parents that see sewage coming out of the taps, you mentally not going to want touch that tap. So even though they are saying it is safe, we've physically seen, and have pictures and videos of what was coming out of our taps, no-one is comfortable using that water again, so ‘till today we are still purchasing water for bathing, cooking and all."
