Police in the Free State have pounced on an armed gang thought to have been on their way to KZN to carry out a cash-in-transit heist.

National Commissioner Fannie Masemola says a security officer was killed in a shootout when police swooped on the suspects on a road in Vrede yesterday.
He says the suspects' car overturned, and the pair were arrested.

Meanwhile, in Memela, some 50 kilometres away, officers nabbed three suspects.
'At this scene, there are about two or three suspects that ran away, and we are behind their heels, we will make sure we arrest them,” Masemola said.
An AK47 and an R5 rifle with more than 240 rounds of high-calibre ammunition were seized.
Two Mercedes Benz cars believed to have been stolen were recovered.
