Church council condemns unethical practices

The South African Council of Churches says it is the lack of accountability by some pastors which has led to what it is calling unethical practices within churches.

The council met yesterday in Pretoria to discuss some of the eye-raising practices that are happening in mostly charismatic churches.

A number of pastors have grabbed headlines, with a video of one of them feeding his congregation snakes at his Pretoria church having gone viral.

The Council's Reverend Gift Morane says religious leaders need to be held accountable.

"What we've seen does not necessarily represent the spirituality of the religious leaders in this country. It's something foreign to our teachings and practice, where we see leaders jumping on top of bodies of women. So, the churches are actually greedier and that must be condemned," he said.
