Pappas was on Monday announced as the DA's candidate to become KwaZulu-Natal premier after next year’s general elections.

The DA's former provincial leader, Sizwe Mchunu, has written to the Public Protector's Office asking for an investigation into allegations that excessive grants were given to a newly established NPO solely owned by his fiancé.

Mchunu claims the municipality gave Umngeni Tourism NPO R100 000.

Speaking on East Coast Radio's Breakfast Show on Thursday, Pappas denied these claims, saying the municipality is not involved in tourism tenders.

"The business that they speak about was only registered a month ago, so it is impossible for this particular company to have got tenders two years ago as they talk about.

"We have never put out a tourism tender as a municipality, so there's no money that actually moved."
