Chris Hani's death remembered
The work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was called into question by the wife of the late SACP leader Chris Hani yesterday in Boksburg.
Speaking at Hani’s memorial, Limpho Hani said she believed the government established the TRC in haste to ensure a transition from apartheid to freedom.
“We still don’t have full disclosure, knowledge or truth as to what, who or why my husband was assassinated, which begs the question: was the Truth and Reconciliation Commission effective as millions like myself remain in the dark?” she said.
“I feel let down by my own government. Cadres of the ANC failed to deliver. I appeal to government to deploy comrades who are going to work for the nation not their own agendas,” said Hani's widow.
Limpho Hani said she was disappointed when the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) failed to pursue their investigation into her husband’s death.
“Two years ago the SACP requested the NPA to reopen my husband’s case. The head of the NPA said 'bring new evidence'. I found the response very interesting and arrogant,” she said.
Hani added that apartheid leaders such as former apartheid president, PW Botha, were let off the hook while victims and their families suffered.
“Perpetrators did not participate in the TRC, only the foot soldiers did... I base [this] on Botha’s refusal to appear before the TRC, calling it a circus. The TRC effectiveness in terms of their goals is highly debatable. Thousands still do not know what happened to their loved ones,” she said.
