Child labour an enemy of progress - Ramaphosa
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
President Cyril Ramaphosa says no country can say it's at the forefront of progress if it builds its wealth and success on the backs of children.
Ramaphosa was speaking at the 5th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour in Durban.
"Child labour is an enemy of our children's development, it is an enemy of our children's future and it is an enemy of progress. It is also an enemy of nationhood."
He said everyone can play a role in protecting children.

"The South African Constitution advances the right of every child to be protected from exploitative labour practices.
"This includes not being permitted to perform work or services that are age-inappropriate or that place the child's well-being, education, physical or mental health at risk.
"Such exploitative labour practices are also disallowed as they impact on a child's spiritual, moral and social development."
Meanwhile, Durban Metro Police spokesperson Parboo Sewpersad says there are a number of road closures you need to be aware of around the ICC, where the conference is taking place.
