Chatsworth murder trial: Community upset over delays

The National Prosecuting Authority says the mother and daughter charged with the murder of three-year-old Jamie Naidoo have been granted more time by the Chatsworth Magistrate's Court to undergo further mental evaluation.

Earlier today, 32-year-old Patricia Ishwalal and 55-year-old Salatchee Basanich appeared briefly in the court where they requested to be assessed by private practitioner.

This is after the court was presented with medical assessment reports declaring both mentally fit to stand trial in July.

The two are charged with beating the three-year-old girl to death at their Havenside home in November.

The matter has been adjourned to October to allow them time to access funds for the private practitioner.

Local councillor Brendan Pillay, who was in court, says delays in the matter are causing more anger in the community.

"Members of the community are very upset and angry at the fact that the case is dragging on. It's at least three appearances now that have been remanded after the State has found they were fit to stand trial.

"The fact that this is now prolonging is becoming a huge challenge and people are concerned that this case should reach finality and the trial should happen," he said.
