Chatsworth man arrested for opening false hijacking case
Updated | By Bernadette Wicks
A Chatsworth man has been arrested for allegedly trying to open a false case of attempted hijacking at his local police station in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The 21-year-old man will appear in the Chatsworth Magistrate's Court soon, facing charges of perjury and defeating the ends of justice.
SAPS spokesperson Thembeka Mbele says it is alleged that while the man was at the police station opening his case, officers received news that a gunshot victim had been admitted at a local hospital.
“Upon interviewing the victim, it was established that the complainant in the ‘attempted carjacking’ had sought assistance from the gunshot victim to hijack his vehicle,” Mbele says, “Police are continuing with investigations”.
Police are warning members of the public that making a false statement under oath is a criminal offence and offenders will be prosecuted.
