Cele warns of zero tolerance for illegal alcohol traders
Updated | By Xolani Khumalo
Police Minister Bheki Cele is adopting a take-no-prisoners approach to people trading illegally in alcohol this festive season.
Cele was in Cape Town on Monday as the ministry continues to roll out its Safer Festive Season Campaign around the country.
Presenting the latest crime statistics last month, Cele said alcohol and drugs had contributed to 3 695 of the cases of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
The minister said there would be zero tolerance for the illegal trade of liquor.
"What we are doing is that we shall not allow people to trade when it comes to alcohol.
"Alcohol, while we all appreciate that it is a good social lubrication where people enjoy it but it is also one of the generators of crime, especially crime like rape and murder.”
