Police Minister Bheki Cele visited the family of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor candidate who was killed in Pietermaritzburg over the weekend.
Thulani Shangase was gunned down in Caluza on Sunday night.
It's understood he was returning from an EFF campaign meeting when he was attacked.
The police's Political Task Team has taken over the investigation into his murder.
Cele on Wednesday made a stop at the place where Shangase was killed.
"We know that they were taking some drinks. So we do need to look at this issue that we now and again raise that alcohol sometimes can be a real generator of crime situation sometimes very serious like this one where we lost lives,” he said.
Earlier on, #Cele inspected the crime scene where #Shangase’s body was found. EFF uMgungundlovu regional secretary David Msomi says they believe the murder was politically motivated with #LGE just days away @ECR_Newswatch pic.twitter.com/ud1e8PZPN8
