Cele: Police aiming to curb drug trafficking over festive season

Police Minister Bheki Cele says law enforcement is tightening security at the country's ports to curb drug trafficking.

Drugs at Durban Harbour

Last week, police seized cocaine with an estimated street value of R151 million at the Durban Harbour.

It arrived on a ship from Brazil.

In October, officials confiscated cocaine worth a combined R152 million in two separate busts in the same week.

One consignment was found at the harbour and the second, also from the South American country, had been hidden in meat boxes at the Dube Trade Port.

Arrests are yet to be made.

Cele says they're still tracing the source and the destination of the drugs.

"We continue to intensify operations at our ports of entry to ensure that we prevent and combat the influx of illegal and unwanted persons into the country as well as put a stop to the flow of illicit goods."

Speaking in Pretoria, the minister said they'll also clamp down on facilities producing illicit goods across the country.

"A laboratory operating from a house producing an alcoholic spirit labelled as Smirnoff 1818 was dismantled in KZN in Amanzimtoti township of KwaMakhutha.

"It is therefore encouraging that 13 drug laboratories were dismantled in Gauteng, North West and Western Cape since the start of this financial year."
